Last week, Nancy Hoffman—the owner of Gallery H in Three Oaks, Michigan—came to my studio to review work for an upcoming group exhibition. Nancy and I have a long history—we've been friends for more then a decade. Over the years, she has done a wonderful job representing my work in the Chicago/Michigan market... I was excited to show her the work that I've been producing. By the conclusion of our meeting, she had selected nine pieces for the show. This past Saturday morning, I drove out to Gallery H to deliver the paintings.

I spent the day with Nancy and her assistant, Elisha, installing the exhibition. The show includes work by: Ellen Cocose, Len Cowgill, Sheila Ganch, Andrea Harris, Deanna Krueger, Tom Matucci, Sheila Oettinger, Francine Turk and myself. The work flows together seamlessly with a [generally] muted color palette—exploring obsessive patterns and textures which leave the viewer absorbed in introspection. The show will be up through July so if you're looking for one more reason to explore Harbor Country, here it is.

Gallery H, Three Oaks, MI

Gallery H: Sheila Ganch sculpture, Charles Gniech: Anomaly, 40 x 60", acrylic on canvas

A number of years ago, I presented a series of large figurative paintings in a solo exhibition at the Fine Arts Building Gallery. The space included a secondary “members gallery” that presented one piece of work from each of the affiliated artists. After my solo show closed, I moved one the recently shown pieces—“The Actor Sleeps” to the “members gallery”. The substantial painting was eight-feet tall, four-feet wide, and dominated the space.

At the reception for the following exhibition—the work of Grace Cole, if I remember correctly—I was working the front desk. And that’s when I met Nancy Hoffman.

A beautiful woman approached me and asked about the very large painting in the members gallery. She asked me who the artist was and I smiled, extended my hand, and introduced myself. She responded in kind, and after some conversation, Nancy scheduled a meeting to see additional work. She later purchased “The Actor Sleeps” and with a common love for art, we became friends.

Nancy Hoffman is the Director of Gallery H in Three Oaks, Michigan. After seeing my recent exhibition at Gallery 180, she requested some of my work for her Michigan gallery. I was happy to be included.

I drove up to Three Oaks last week to deliver the work. Three Oaks is a little town located a few minutes over the Indiana – Michigan Border. The surrounding area is inhabited by the summer homes of Chicago’s affluent. The perfect getaway, Harbor Country offers its residents a quick and peaceful retreat from the chaos of their busy lives in the city. The area includes the beautiful Lake Michigan beaches, plenty of restaurants, antiques, and—or course—fine art.

Being a Curator, I helped to install the current exhibition at Gallery H, which includes the work of Deanna Krueger, Richard Laurent, Sheila Ganch, Audry Cramblit and Andrea Harris. The various paintings and sculptures work seamlessly to create a space of peaceful contemplation. The superior quality of the fine art presented, has resulted in a stellar reputation for Hoffman and her gallery. If you have an opportunity to head up to Harbor Country, take the time to explore Gallery H located at 15 S. Elm, Three Oaks, Michigan. It’s worth the trip.

Andrea Harris ~ Visual Narrative

Andrea Harris is one of four local [to Chicago] artists included in the Visual Narrative exhibition at Gallery 180 of The Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago, which opens this Friday. With two canvases in the show—“Amina Lawal and her daughter” and “Women of Pakistan” [both: oil and wax on canvas, 24” square]— Harris focuses on portraiture to tell her story. The imagery is bold and inspirational. Harris explains:
“My paintings are observations of humanity, representing the journey of curiosity and the soul of discovery. Each of us is unique in the universe yet shape, form and color remind us that we are elements in nature. Very often my art is the result of an exploration of culture and current events, urging me to question and allowing me the passage that reveals we are all connected.”

“The painting of Amina Lawal and her daughter is my direct response to the poignant story that was highlighted in the media several years ago. Ms. Lawal had been sentenced to stoning to death in the Kataina State of northern Nigeria. Amnesty International embraced her story and a global effort was initiated in a petition to save her life. This process became the focal point of human rights groups around the world, and ultimately Ms. Lawal was set free. She lives with her daughter, Wasila, and campaigns on behalf of others who have been victims of human rights violations.”
Join us for the Opening Reception of "Visual Narrative", Friday, June 11th from 5:30-7:30pm. As always, the reception is free to the public.

“Visual Narrative” will be presented at Gallery 180 of The Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago through July 22nd. This exhibition is free and open to the public. Works are available for purchase. An exhibition catalog for Visual Narrative is available. Gallery 180 is located at 180 N. Wabash—at the corner of Lake and Wabash—in Chicago’s Loop. The gallery is open Monday-Thursday 8am-8pm; Friday, 8am-5:30pm; Saturday, 9am-5pm; closed Sunday.

Andrea Harris at the Brushwood Gallery

Imagery perfect for Chicago, at this time of year. An exhibition of large-scale encaustic landscape paintings—created by Andrea Harris—will be opening this Sunday, January 10th from 1-3pm at Brushwood Gallery in Deerfield, Illinois. Harris continues her exploration of wooded terrain in the company of intimate organic sculptures by Vivian Visser. Both artists are exploring the concept of shelter and refuge in the natural world.

The Opening Reception is free to the public and the Brushwood Gallery - Ryerson Woods, is located at 21850 Riverwoods Road in Deerfield. The show—and the reception— should be wonderful, but if you're unable to attend, check out more of Harris' work at: andreaharris.com

Ardrea Harris at Homey Gallery

An exhibition of wonderful new nature paintings by Andrea Harris will open tomorrow at Homey Gallery, located at 3656 N. Lincoln Avenue in Chicago. I dropped by the gallery last week to get a preview of Harris' new work but most of the pieces had not yet been delivered. There was—however—a few of her new works to review. I was impressed. Harris' technique has matured and the presentation of the mystical environments elevates the imagery to a new level of wonderful. The exhibition—featuring oil and cold wax paintings—will continue through October 26th. Tomorrow's reception will include a book signing of "In the Forest and Beyond" which features Harris' imagery. Harris will be funding the planting of a tree with the purchase of each book... and a grove of trees for each painting sold. The reception for Harris will be from 6-9pm—tomorrow—Saturday, October 3rd. If you have the opportunity to see this exhibition, it will be worth your while.

Andrea Harris... From Nature

I've known Andrea Harris since my days at The Fine Arts Building Gallery. She is a wonderful artist and quite a prolific painter. Andrea has worked with a few different subjects but the most interesting to me are her landscapes. Most of her images are created on canvas with oil and wax. The above image, which is included in the "From Nature" exhibition at Gallery 180 of The Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago, is twenty-four inches square and titled "Beyond the Clearing". This image has a loose, impressionistic feel yet created with muted earth tones. The image evokes a quite feeling of tranquillity. The painting is available for $1,200.

I spent some time, talking with Andrea when she dropped off her work for the "From Nature" exhibition. She has been compiling a book which documents this work. A book signing is scheduled for the fall to coincide with a show of her works at Homey Gallery, located at 3656 N. Lincoln in Chicago. If you haven't been to this gallery, make the effort. Being an avid gardener, I found a variety of indoor and outdoor pieces of which I had interest. One such piece was the rug shown below. It is a soft carpet of rock-like texture. I was intrigued.
